Rant
Firstly
chaal musing about the nature of LJ communication.
On a completely different note... I currently run the Heat magazine fanlisting. It's only a very small fanlisting as I haven't got around to promoting it yet, (and I'm having problems with the scripting. If anyone can tell me how to check the php.ini, and where it's found, I'd be grateful as I don't have the first clue about PHP)
Up until now I've always really enjoyed Heat, one of the few magazines of it's ilk that treats it's reader's semi-intelligently, and I've enjoyed it's irreverent sense of humour. (And the ad campaign stating the higher the IQ, the greater the need for gossip - pure genius).
But recently I've felt uncomfortable with the direction it's taking. You can argue about a celebrities right to privacy, and the legitamacy of printing stories about their private lives, (and I will admit to feeling slightly hypocritical for enjoying those stories) but I do feel that children should be off limits.
Guess what? Heat has been printing lots of stories and photo's about celebrities and children, even to the point of a few weeks ago printing an entire article purely about celebrities kids. Over the line in my opinion.
And then this week they brought in the mini magazine Scandal. Well I'm sorry, if I wanted to read this quality of journalism I would be buying the Mail or Mirror etc. (And if there is anyone out there buying the Mail, please stop. This is the paper that said people should stop giving money to the British Red Cross, because the French Red Cross was running the Sangette Refugee Camp. And they were running it at the request of the French government because the refugees were already there, sleeping in the streets and they're a humanitarian society for gods sake. Rant Over.:-) )
And the quality of stories in the main magazine are going downhill as well. Who is actually waiting to hear Madonna announce she's pregnant again? Didn't they trot out this story last year? Although it was quite funny as the doctor quoted in the article was one of my consultants when I was pregnant. (BTW Bath & North East Somerset is one of the best places to give birth in the country.)
So I'm considering stopping buying Heat, (And for the last year I've bought it religously almost every week) and using the money saved to subscribe to Private Eye. And plus I'm thinking of giving up the fanlisting. I'm just worried it might be over-reacting. Or is it taking a stand on an issue I feel strongly about? (Even though I know my actions won't make one iota of difference. (And thanks to Min I know now where this phrase come from.
Wow. This was a long post from me. (Well for me anyway!)

Re:
I thought trying persuade people not to donate to the Red Cross was low, even for them.
I won't be surprised by anything they do know.
